The Railroad Pass Hotel & Casino is a popular stop for travelers coming or going to such destinations as Las Vegas, Henderson or Boulder City, Nevada. The reasons for its popularity are many; good friends, great food and fun games go without saying. And it is full of colorful Southern Nevada History. Established in 1931 as the Railroad Pass Club it was built to provide construction workers from Hoover Dam a place to gamble and drink. Adjacent to the Hotel &Casino is an old spur for the Union Pacific Railroad which inspired much of the decor found in today’s casino and restaurants. In addition, there is a museum called the “Heritage Room” showcasing 84 years of history.
All this is easy to find, but one of the most interesting parts of Railroad Pass Hotel history is tucked away somewhat, the “Safe Room” just off the casino floor. This room is home to a famous safe used to hold the payroll for the construction workers from Hoover Dam. To this day, a stop at the Safe Room makes a memorable trip.
The Safe Room can be found adjacent the West entrance of the Casino. The first thing that catches the eye is a massive vault door from the past. The vault door was manufactured by Hall’s Safe and Lock Company in Cincinnati and San Francisco sometime between 1870 and 1892. The vault was actually built around the safe. The floor is six feet thick and the walls are one foot thick, both built of solid concrete. Once the vault was finished the safe was in place for good. The vault door is permanently in the open position, allowing anyone access to the safe inside. Decades ago the combination to the safe was lost and to this day no one knows what treasures it may still contain.
The walls of the vault are decorated with photographs of historic trains and newspapers. The concrete floors, walls and ceiling give visitors the sense that the vault once contained something needing such impressive protection; perhaps gold, stock certificates, jewelry money or other treasure. Who knows for sure? All that is certain is now it is full of history.
Any guest visiting the Railroad Pass Hotel & Casino can gamble, eat, drink or spend a restful night. Putting a visit to the Safe Room on the list of “to do’s” is a must.
