Out of anywhere you could visit this summer, your best bet for world class gaming, regular prizes and a little history thrown in is the Railroad Pass Hotel and Casino. Of the casinos in Nevada, Railroad Pass is one of the most historic sites in the entire state. This year we’re celebrating a milestone anniversary: 85 years of bringing high quality entertainment to the people of Nevada. Keep reading to learn more about the history of the Railroad Pass Casino and find out how you can take part in the exciting celebrations planned for our 85th anniversary.
The Founding of Railroad Pass Hotel and Casino
The area where the casino is located, dates back to the building of the Hoover Dam. In the 1890s, the Union Pacific Railroad was the main source of cross country transportation, both for people and goods. When the Hoover Dam was under construction, the Union Pacific had to connect its main tracks to those near the dam; this was the initial purpose of the Railroad Pass. Later on, when the Casino was built, the initial founders decided to name the hotel and casino after the soon to be historic landmark.
Railroad Pass Club
On June 4th, 1931, the construction for the 6,000 square foot casino and dance hall began. Lumber was delivered to the location by the Union Pacific Railroad. The club also trucked 2,500 gallon of water daily from Boulder City to provide fresh water for guests. However, the casino’s deep history extends to just more than its name, having close ties to the legacy of legal gaming in Nevada, as a hotel in Boulder City.
One of the Original Four
Gaming was not fully legal in the state of Nevada. After many years of legal wrangling, Governor Fred B. Balzar signed a bill to legalized gambling in 1931. However, the state now required that every establishment that offered gaming be licensed by the state.
The Railroad Pass Casino was given license number four. It was issued to F.J. Warren of Los Angeles for the Railroad Pass Club. The Mayor of Las Vegas also issued a permit to Warren for permission to use a single roulette wheel. The casino still possesses its original licensing to this day, which is the only remaining license of the original four—the third licensed casino is now out of business and the initial two licenses were never issued.
On August 1st, 1931, Railroad Pass Club manager, O.T. Buck, opened the doors for its official grand opening. When you’re looking for historic hotels in Nevada, there is no establishment more rooted in the state’s history than the Railroad Pass Hotel and Casino.
